What is the Canada Workers Benefit?

The Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) is a refundable tax credit for eligible individuals and families who work and earn a low income. CRA describes two parts: a basic amount and, for eligible people, a disability supplement.

The CWB is not a separate cash-claim form on this website. The official process is part of filing an income tax and benefit return.

Who may be eligible?

CRA’s rules are specific to the tax year. In general, the basic amount requires working income, net income below the applicable threshold for the province or territory, residence in Canada throughout the year, and being at least 19 on December 31 (unless living with a spouse/common-law partner or child).

CRA also lists exclusions. For example, a person may not qualify in some full-time student, incarceration, or foreign-diplomat circumstances. The disability supplement has additional requirements, including an approved Disability Tax Credit certificate with CRA.

How the amount is determined

There is no universal CWB amount. CRA uses factors including working income, adjusted family net income, marital status, eligible dependants, province or territory of residence, and Disability Tax Credit eligibility.

For the 2025 tax year, CRA lists maximum basic amounts of $1,633 for single individuals and $2,813 for families in the general federal calculation, with differences for Quebec, Nunavut, and Alberta. Those figures are maximums, not promises. Benefits phase down at specified income levels and may be zero.

How to claim CWB

File your income tax and benefit return for the relevant year.

  • With certified tax software, follow the software’s CWB instructions.
  • With a paper return, CRA instructs filers to complete and attach Schedule 6 and enter the applicable result on line 45300.

If you receive an RC210 statement for Advanced Canada Workers Benefit payments, CRA provides separate return instructions for reporting that amount.

How advance payments work

CRA states that people entitled to CWB can receive up to 50% of the benefit as Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB) payments. CRA determines this from the tax return; you do not apply separately for the advance payments. CRA’s published schedule lists three payment dates for the benefit period, subject to the official rules and payment-date adjustments.

Your income or personal circumstances can affect the final calculation. For tax or filing advice tailored to you, use CRA resources, certified tax software, or a qualified tax professional.
