Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit: Check the Official CRA Information

A plain-language guide to the CRA’s current CGEB eligibility, tax-return, and payment information.

Anúncios

The Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) is the current name for the former GST/HST credit. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) sends eligible people tax-free payments quarterly. Whether you qualify, and how much you may receive, depends on your personal tax and family information.

This is an independent guide. It cannot confirm eligibility or access CRA records.

Start with the official CRA check

  1. Open the CRA CGEB overview.
  2. Review the eligibility criteria and income thresholds.
  3. Check that you file an income tax return every year, even if you had no income to report. In most cases, CRA considers you automatically after it assesses your return.
  4. Use CRA’s official benefit calculator or your CRA account for an estimate or payment information.

What CRA uses to calculate CGEB

CRA says the calculation can depend on:

  • adjusted family net income;
  • marital status; and
  • eligible children under 19, where applicable.

The benefit is recalculated every July using the previous year’s tax return. For the July 2026 to June 2027 payment period, CRA publishes base amounts of $445 for an eligible individual or spouse and $234 for each eligible child. Those are not a promise of what any one person will receive.

Do you need to apply?

Usually, no. If you are a Canadian resident for tax purposes, filing your annual tax return is generally how CRA considers you. A new resident of Canada may need to apply for the first year before filing a first return; CRA explains that process on its official application page.

Keep your information current

Changes in family income, marital status, custody, address, or direct-deposit details can affect benefits. Use CRA’s official guidance and secure services rather than sharing personal tax or banking details with third parties.
