April 28 OAS Deposit — Have You Verified Your New Amount Yet?
April 28, 2026 is three weeks away. And if you’re receiving Old Age Security, that date matters — it’s when your updated quarterly payment hits your bank account.
But here’s the thing: a lot of Canadian seniors don’t actually check their OAS amount until after something goes wrong. A deposit that’s lower than expected. A clawback deduction they didn’t see coming. Banking details that weren’t updated after switching accounts.
Right now, while there’s still time to fix anything that needs fixing, is exactly when you should be logging in.
The quarterly CPI adjustment for April–June 2026 has already been calculated. It’s reflected in the maximum OAS rate published by Service Canada. What it means for your specific payment depends on your residency history, your direct deposit setup, and whether you’re subject to the OAS Recovery Tax.
If your 2025 net income was above $90,997, Service Canada is already deducting a recovery tax from your 2026 monthly payments. That deduction could mean your April deposit is smaller than the published maximum — even after the quarterly increase. The clawback and the increase happen simultaneously, and a lot of seniors don’t realize the net effect until they look at their actual account.
If you receive both OAS and the Guaranteed Income Supplement, April 28 is an even bigger date. Your combined deposit includes the updated OAS rate and any GIS adjustment for the new benefit year. These two amounts land in your bank as one deposit, but they’re calculated separately — and the GIS portion is entirely non-taxable.
For single seniors receiving both maximum OAS and maximum GIS, that combined monthly amount is now over $1,800. That’s real retirement income — and it’s worth knowing exactly what you’re entitled to.
Three weeks isn’t a long window, but it’s enough time to:
- Log into My Service Canada Account and confirm your payment amount
- Update banking details if you’ve recently switched accounts
- Contact Service Canada about any discrepancies
- Check whether you’re maximizing your GIS if you qualify
- Review your income plan if the OAS clawback is reducing your payments
You stay on this website. No payment required.
There’s also a group of Canadians who are eligible for OAS but haven’t applied yet — or who were never auto-enrolled. If that’s you, you may have months of retroactive payments waiting. Service Canada allows up to 11 months of back-payments from the date of application.
Don’t wait until April 29 to discover a problem that could have been resolved before the deposit date. Five minutes in your MSCA account now is worth far more than a phone call to Service Canada after a missed or reduced payment.
Your April 28 deposit should reflect the right amount, in the right account, on the right day. Take ten minutes this week and make sure it will.
