If you worked in Canada and had a low income, the Canada Workers Benefit (CWB) may be relevant when you file your income tax and benefit return. The CWB is a refundable tax credit. Whether it applies, and the amount if any, depend on your income, household situation, and province or territory of residence.
Start with the official rule
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) says the CWB is for eligible individuals and families with working income and low income. In general, you must meet income, residence, age, and family-status conditions. Some situations, including certain full-time study and incarceration circumstances, can affect eligibility.
Gather the information needed for your income tax and benefit return.
Confirm your working income, net income, province or territory of residence, and family situation for the tax year.
File using certified tax software, or use the CRA paper-return instructions and Schedule 6 where applicable.
If you believe the disability supplement may apply, check CRA’s Disability Tax Credit requirements.
Keep your tax records and check CRA communications or My Account for information about your return and benefits.
What about advance payments?
CRA determines Advanced Canada Workers Benefit (ACWB) eligibility after receiving an income tax and benefit return. If you are entitled to CWB, CRA may automatically send advance payments for the applicable benefit period. There is no separate application for these advance payments.
Amounts are personal — do not rely on a headline number
CRA publishes maximum amounts and income thresholds for each tax year, but your result can differ based on your circumstances and where you live. For 2025, CRA lists maximum basic CWB amounts of up to $1,633 for a single individual and up to $2,813 for a family, subject to the rules and jurisdictional variations. Check the official page for the tax year you are filing.
