When comparing an older notice with a newer payment, check the benefit name before assuming the rules changed. The next page explains what stayed the same and how to review your own CRA record.

That means many recipients should keep thinking about the benefit in the same practical way: file the required tax return, keep family information current and check the CRA account when a payment is expected. The amount can be higher because July 2026 introduced an increase, but a higher amount does not mean the benefit became taxable or that everyone qualifies automatically.

What changed in July 2026
The name changed from the GST/HST credit to the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. The program continues to provide tax-free quarterly payments for people and families with low or modest incomes, and payments may still include amounts connected with provincial or territorial programs. In other words, the label on a CRA page or statement may be different even when the benefit is familiar.
The payment level also increased in July 2026. The CRA describes a 25% increase that remains for five years from 2026 to 2031. This is the main financial difference in the comparison; it should not be confused with a new application process or a new tax credit that must be claimed separately.
What stayed the same
- Tax assessment Your tax return remains central to the CRA's eligibility and calculation process.
- Quarterly rhythm The benefit continues to be delivered in quarterly payments, with the payment period running from July to June.
- Family factors Adjusted family net income, marital status and eligible children can affect the amount.
- Account records Your CRA account remains the place to review payment details, dates and statements.
Why the name can cause confusion
A past payment, a bank description or an older letter may still use GST/HST credit. The CRA's current pages identify CGEB as the former credit, so comparing the payment period and the tax year used for the calculation is more useful than relying on the label alone. A missing or changed payment can have several explanations, including a tax return that has not yet been assessed or a change in family circumstances.

Frequently asked questions
Is CGEB a completely new benefit?
No. The CRA describes CGEB as the benefit that replaced the GST/HST credit and says its eligibility, payment calculation and structure are the same under the new name.
Did the benefit become taxable?
No. The current CRA information says CGEB payments are not taxable, so you do not report the payments as taxable income on your return.
Why was my payment amount different after July?
The benefit amount increased in July 2026, and the CRA recalculates the amount using information from the previous year's tax return. Family income and household details can also affect it.
