4. Old Age Security (OAS) — For Canadian Residents 65+
OAS is a monthly payment available to most Canadians 65 and older who have lived in Canada for at least 10 years after age 18. Unlike the CPP, OAS is funded from general tax revenue — there’s no requirement to have worked or contributed.
$727.05/month for ages 65–74, $835.94/month for ages 75+. Taxable income. Recovered at high incomes.
Application is automatic for most Canadians — Service Canada uses your tax return to determine eligibility. But immigrants and Canadians who have been out of the country may need to apply manually up to 6 months before turning 65.
5. Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) — Top-Up for Low-Income OAS Recipients
GIS is a monthly top-up added to OAS for low-income seniors. It’s tax-free and available to single seniors with annual income below about $22,000 or couples below about $29,000 (combined, excluding OAS itself).
Up to $1,103.35/month for single seniors, $666.81/month for couples (each). Tax-free. Automatic if eligible.
Many eligible seniors never apply because they don’t realize OAS recipients can also receive GIS. The threshold depends on income; recent retirees with workplace pensions often qualify without knowing it.
6. Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) — Quarterly Payment for All Residents
The Canada Carbon Rebate (formerly the Climate Action Incentive Payment) is a quarterly tax-free payment to households in provinces with federal carbon pricing. The amount depends on your province of residence and family size.
$1,120/year (Ontario), $1,504/year (Alberta), $900/year (Manitoba). Tax-free. Paid quarterly. 10% rural supplement.
